Yale Glee Club Service Through Music Fellowship
Award Amount
up to 25,000
Competition Type
Yale
Brief Description:
The
Yale Glee Club Service Through Music Fellowship
was established by the Yale Glee Club Associates to provide financial support for
a graduating Yale student, or a student taking a year off from his or her studies
, who proposes to spend the fellowship year (9-12 months) engaged full-time in an
ambitious, innovative project combining music and public service
. The fellowship is based on the shared conviction of generations of Yale Glee Club alumni that
the arts - and choral singing in particular - can be used to foster understanding between people, promote mental well-being, and bring about positive social change
. Recipients will demonstrate a deep understanding of the power of music to transform lives, as well as the creativity, ingenuity, and resourcefulness to carry a successful project from conception to fruition.
This fellowship is administered by the
Office of Fellowships
as part of the Yale College Postgraduate Fellowships. The
Yale College Postgraduate (YCPG) Fellowships
are a collection of fellowships that support a range of activities that may range in duration and type of supported activities. These awards share a common application form.
**The Yale College Postgraduate Fellowships Common Application will open on Monday October 21, 2024)**
Description:
The
Yale Glee Club Service Through Music Fellowship
was established by the Yale Glee Club Associates to provide financial support for a graduating Yale student, or a student taking a year off from his or her studies, who proposes to spend the fellowship year engaged full-time in an ambitious, innovative project combining music and public service. The fellowship is based on the shared conviction of generations of Yale Glee Club alumni that the arts - and choral singing in particular - can be used to foster understanding between people, promote mental well-being, and bring about positive social change. Recipients will demonstrate a deep understanding of the power of music to transform lives, as well as the creativity, ingenuity, and resourcefulness to carry a successful project from conception to fruition.
Preference will be given to projects that involve choral singing, but other music-related projects may be considered
. Special consideration will be given to projects that demonstrate potential for long-term sustainability. Projects within the US (domestic) and international projects are both eligible. Projects can be entirely new initiatives or meaningful transformations of existing organizations, and may be based on broad initiatives suggested by the Yale Glee Club Associates.
Examples of possible projects include but are by no means limited to:
1) Launching a youth chorus in an economically disadvantaged area
2) Establishing a singing ensemble that seeks to empower marginalized members of society, such as the incarcerated, the homeless, or the mentally ill
3) Creating a rigorous and innovative community engagement program for an existing choral or other musical organization
4) Fostering the creation and performance of new music that promotes themes of social justice
Successful applicants will receive funds to directly support their proposed projects, as well as funds to defray their own living expenses for a period of 9 to 12 months. The minimum project duration is nine months and the proposed project must be the recipient’s primary activity for the duration of the fellowship.
Awards up to $25,000. In rare circumstances, larger amounts can be considered at the discretion of the selection committee.
Fellowship recipients will be required to confirm progress on their projects at a designated milestone date in the middle of the academic year and upon completion to the Yale Glee Club Associates. The Yale Glee Club Associates may be able to arrange for consulting support to the successful applicant depending upon the substance of his or her project and its geography.

A complete Service through Music application includes:
1. Online Application
2. Two Letters of reference
3. Language Evaluation (for international projects requiring non-native language skills)
4. Letter of Affiliation (optional)
5. Project Proposal / Program of Study (including a budget)
6. Resume / List of Activities or Awards
7. Transcripts
Interested applicants should attend an upcoming
information session
offered by the Office of Fellowships and may
schedule an appointment
with
Dr. Mya Fisher, the
advisor for the
Yale College Postgraduate Fellowships
. Make sure to review the fellowship descriptions and watch the recorded information session or attend and upcoming one prior to meeting with Dr. Fisher.
Advising appointments are not intended to be 1-on-1 information sessions
.

Special Eligibility Requirements:
Applicants must be graduating seniors from Yale College. Under certain circumstances, current students taking a year long leave from Yale, or Yale graduate students, may be considered.
Applicants from any field or discipline are eligible.
The fellowship activity may take place
domestically in the U.S
. or
internationally.
There is only one application cycle each academic year
. Students graduating in December may apply for the YCPG Fellowships in the spring semester following their graduation. For example, a December 2025 graduate will apply in spring 2026. However, the earliest a December graduate would be able to begin a fellowship is May 2026.
Restrictions to Use of Award:
To satisfy the minimum duration requirements of the fellowship, the applicant's project must be his or her primary activity, conducted without interruption, for the duration of the experience.
Additionally,
a recipient of any Yale College Postgraduate Fellowship CANNOT undertake any other activities while a fellow.
Such activities include but are not limited to part-/full-time work, internship, research, formal educational study, etc.
This fellowship may not be combined with any other fellowship award, internal or external to Yale. If you are awarded a Yale College Postgraduate Fellowship, you
cannot accept
any other fellowships or awards that overlap the duration of the YC Postgraduate Fellowship. If awarded multiple fellowships, you will be expected to decide on one of the options.
This fellowship award cannot be deferred.
All interested applicants considering overseas projects must review the
Yale University International Travel Policy
. Projects in specific countries within approved regions may not be eligible for funding based on current State Department Warnings and the Yale University International Travel Policy.
Yale University policy requires that certain types of research projects involving human subjects be reviewed by an institutional review board (IRB) prior to the start of the study to ensure that the project meets University requirements and any applicable regulations.
to see if your project needs to be reviewed, for advice on working with human subjects, and for more information about the process and requirements.
Students applying to fellowships to support activities in or near their home towns may not be eligible to receive funding for certain budget items (e.g. housing). Please ask a fellowships adviser for more information.
International student applicants should inform the Office of International Students and Scholars of their plans to ensure they will be in compliance with the terms of their visa.
