Brief Description:

The Parker Huang Postgraduate Fellowship helps to support a postgraduate year (10-12 months) of study, research, or work abroad. The Fellowships are awarded each year to students who plan to study or work in non-English-speaking countries. The awards are intended to support either advanced language study beyond the intermediate level (begun at Yale or elsewhere) or study/work/research (in the language of the host country) focusing on socio-cultural issues in the host country.

This fellowship is administered by the Office of Fellowships as part of the Yale College Postgraduate Fellowships. The Yale College Postgraduate (YCPG) Fellowships are a collection of fellowships that support a range of activities that may range in duration. These fellowships share a common application form.

**The Yale College Postgraduate Fellowships Common Application will open on Monday October 21, 2024)**

Description:

The Parker Huang Postgraduate Fellowship helps to support a year of study, research, or work abroad. These fellowships are made possible by a generous gift from an alumnus honoring Parker Po-fei Huang, a distinguished teacher of Chinese at Yale who retired in 1985. The Parker Huang Fellowships are "being given not because of American successes abroad, but because of our failures and because the international failures of the most powerful country on earth are costly for those who are most powerless."

The Fellowships are awarded each year to students who plan to study or work in non-English-speaking countries. First preference is given to proposals for projects in China; thereafter, elsewhere in Asia, Africa or other regions (such as Central Asia, the Caucasus, Eastern Europe, Russia, Latin America, or the Middle East). The awards are intended to support either advanced language study beyond the intermediate level (begun at Yale or elsewhere) or study/work/research (in the language of the host country) focusing on socio-cultural issues in the host country. Proposals may include either university study, independent projects, or an unpaid/low-paying work experience.

Criteria for selection include the validity and feasibility of the proposed project or program of study and the candidate's seriousness of purpose and academic and other preparation, especially proficiency in the language of the host country sufficient to undertake the proposed project or study.

In countries where English is one of the official languages or main languages spoken, the candidate must have an intermediate level of knowledge of one of the country's non-English languages at the time of application.

This fellowship award cannot be deferred.

All fellowship activity must BEGIN before September 1st of the award year.

All interested applicants considering overseas projects must review the Yale University International Travel Policy. Projects in specific countries within approved regions may not be eligible for funding based on current State Department Warnings and the Yale University International Travel Policy.

Yale University policy requires that certain types of research projects involving human subjects be reviewed by an institutional review board (IRB) prior to the start of the study to ensure that the project meets University requirements and any applicable regulations. Click here to see if your project needs to be reviewed, for advice on working with human subjects, and for more information about the process and requirements.
