Description:

Designed to prepare the next generation of global leaders, the Schwarzman Scholars Program was created to respond to the geopolitical landscape of the 21st Century. Whether in politics, business or science, the success of future leaders around the world will depend upon an understanding of China’s role in global trends. The program is intended to give the world’s best and brightest students the opportunity to develop their leadership skills through a one-year Master’s Degree at Tsinghua University in Beijing – one of China’s most prestigious universities.

Students will live and study together on the campus of Schwarzman College, a newly-built, state-of-the-art facility, where all classes will be taught in English. Students will pursue degrees in one of three areas of concentration:
  • Public Policy
  • Economics and Business
  • International Studies
The Schwarzman Scholars program is open to applicants from any country.  Proficiency in Mandarin is not required, although having it is an asset; strong English language skills are required.

For full details, please refer to the official website.

Application Information:

Interested Yale applicants should first carefully read the information provided on the official Schwarzman Scholars website (don't miss the recorded webinar for prospective applicants, here; or check out their list of live presentations and webinars, here).

Applications should be submitted directly via the official website. The official application system typically opens in April. The official application deadlines for the fourth class of Schwarzman Scholars will be:
  • 11:59pm on May 31, 2019 Schwarzman Scholars China round, for applicants with passports from mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan or Macao
  • 11:59pm on September 26, 2019 Schwarzman Scholars US/Global round, for applicants holding other passports
  • see the Schwarzman website for details.

Although there is no formal campus review process, all applicants are strongly encouraged to meet with a fellowships adviser before submitting their Schwarzman Scholars application.

Special Eligibility Requirements:

The Schwarzman Scholars competition is open to citizens of any nation. This entry in the Yale Database is for applicants in the US/Global application round.

  • Applicants may be graduating seniors (so long as they are on-track to graduate by the time the program would begin: for applications due in 2019, this means by August 2020) or recent alumni who are under the age of 29.
  • All applicants must have strong English language skills.  (Proficiency in Mandarin is not required, but would certainly be an asset.)
  • There is no required minimum GPA, but applicants are expected to have demonstrated excellence in their academic studies, and the most competitive candidates will be among the top students in their graduating class.
  • See the official website for complete eligibility details, here.
