The CIPE Summer Journalism Fellowships include the Elisa Spungen Bildner '75 and Robert Bildner '72 Summer Journalism Fellowship, the Yale College Summer Journalism Fellowship, and the Shana Alexander Journalism/Media Fellowship.

These fellowships provide summer funding to students pursuing and furthering their study of writing, specifically in the field of journalism. The fellowships will consider self-designed projects and internships related to all types of journalism (e.g. print, photo, broadcast).

Please note: the committee’s understanding of journalism requires that projects involve extensive fact-finding, research, and interviews of the kind that could ideally lead to publication in a news-oriented nonfiction periodical, radio or broadcast show, etc. Projects whose main product is a personal journal or diary, or a gallery exhibition, are among those that will not be considered.

The proposed project must be a full-time commitment and be the primary activity for the duration of the fellowship.

Application Information:

The CIPE Summer Journalism Fellowships are one of the CIPE Yale College Summer Fellowships.

Applications received late or submitted via e-mail or in person will NOT be accepted.

Special Eligibility Requirements:

Interested applicants may schedule an appointment with a Fellowship Adviser; however, meeting with an adviser is not mandatory.

Restrictions to Use of Award:

To satisfy the minimum duration requirements of the fellowship to which you are applying, your project must your sole activity, conducted without interruption, for the duration of the experience.

Please note that fellowship funds are meant to cover the costs of the proposed activity only. Budgets should not include compensation for lost income or funding towards the Student Income Contribution.

All interested applicants must review the Yale University International Travel Policy. Projects in specific countries within approved regions may not be eligible for funding based on current UnitedHealthcareGlobal threat ratings, State Department Warnings, and the Yale University International Travel Policy.

Yale University policy requires that certain types of research projects involving human subjects be reviewed by an institutional review board (IRB) prior to the start of the study to ensure that the project meets University requirements and any applicable regulations. Students applying to fellowships to support activities in or near their home towns may not be eligible to receive funding for certain budget items (e.g. housing). Please ask a fellowships adviser for more information.

International student applicants should inform the Office of International Students and Scholars of their plans to ensure they will be in compliance with the terms of their visa.
