The Whitney and Betty MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies at Yale invites applications for Summer 2024 fellowships for language study. All foreign languages are eligible for funding except for Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. Students interested in studying Chinese, Japanese, or Korean should apply to the Richard U. Light Fellowship Program.
Applicants interested in studying a European language who are eligible for Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships (FLAS) should first apply to the Council on European Studies’ FLAS competition. The MacMillan Center will consider applications from FLAS eligible students only if they have submitted an application to the FLAS competition. Students may not hold a FLAS fellowship concurrently with a MacMillan Center language fellowship.
Applicants interested in studying a European language who are not eligible for Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships (FLAS) can apply directly to the MacMillan Center Summer Fellowships for Language Study.
Summer language fellowships are available to any undergraduate, graduate and professional school student whose academic program requires the study of a foreign language or whose research plans require the study of a foreign language. In the application, students are expected to demonstrate a bona fide academic need to study the language they have proposed and show a clear relationship to the applicant’s overall course of study. Only current students who will be continuing their studies at Yale in AY 2024-2025 may apply.
The summer language fellowship provides up to $5,000 toward tuition and fees and up to $2,500 for living expenses.
Yale students may apply the award to recognized intensive programs at other universities within or outside the U.S., as well as to Yale summer intensive language programs and other programs overseas. The MacMillan Center is accepting applications for in-person and virtual programs. No stipend portion of the grant will be awarded for on-line courses.
Funding is limited and competitive, and priority
will be given to students applying for intermediate and advanced level language study, but beginning level study will be considered from Ph.D. students who have a research need for the language. Applicants interested in studying less-commonly taught languages will also be given priority.
Language courses for reading knowledge and on-line courses are not eligible for funding.
Summer awards must be used for a formal, intensive language course that provides the equivalent of an academic year’s training; at least 140 credit or contact 60-minute hours for beginning and intermediate courses, or 120 credit or contact 60-minute hours for advanced courses. All courses MUST last a minimum of six weeks.
Students who intend to use summer language awards at Yale must apply for admission separately through Yale Summer Session, see
http://summer.yale.edu/
.
It is strongly recommended that all candidates apply for financial aid from the summer language program they plan to attend. Those deadlines do not necessarily coincide with the MacMillan Center fellowship schedule.
