Brief Description:

The Solomon Research Fellowship in LGBT Studies provides a limited number of fellowships to support research projects in the field of LGBT Studies that augment our understanding of this field and its history and that advance the value of equality and dignity for LGBTQ people in the United States and around the world.

Description:

The Solomon Research Fellowship in LGBT Studies provides a limited number of fellowships for up to $1,000 to support travel, housing, and other expenses of research projects in the field of LGBT Studies. The Fellowship is for research conducted during the academic year or summer months by Yale undergraduate students, that augment our understanding of this field and its history and that advance the value of equality and dignity for LGBTQ people in the United States and around the world. There are two cycles for the fellowship, one in the fall semester and one in the spring semester. The award is made possible through the generosity of Andrew Solomon ‘85.

Application Information:

The following will be required as part of the application:

  • Description of the project/work for which funding is needed (1-4 pages, double-spaced)

– Successful applications will include a specific description of the relationship between your project and LGBT and gender studies, and citations of specific texts from the relevant fields of scholarship.

  • Itemized budget and description of the need for support

        – Estimated airfare should be documented by a printout from Google, Kayak, Travelocity, or similar website; estimated hotel costs should be documented by a printout from the hotel or hotel discounter website.

        – Please disclose any other financial support solicited for this project.

  • Letter of recommendation

        – Students will also need to provide a letter of recommendation written by a Yale faculty member, to be submitted by the application deadline.

Special Eligibility Requirements:

Currently enrolled first years, sophomores, and juniors are eligible to apply. Preference will be given to those students, especially juniors, whose research is intended to contribute to their senior essays.

Restrictions to Use of Award:

All interested applicants must review the Yale University International Travel Policy. Projects in specific countries within approved regions may not be eligible for funding based on current International SOS threat ratings, State Department Warnings, and the Yale University International Travel Policy.

Yale University policy requires that certain types of research projects involving human subjects be reviewed by an institutional review board (IRB) prior to the start of the study to ensure that the project meets University requirements and any applicable regulations. International student applicants should inform the Office of International Students and Scholars of their plans to ensure they will be in compliance with the terms of their visa.
