Brief Description:

The Class of 1960 established the John Heinz Government Service Fellowship supports sophomores and juniors in U.S. government service summer internships at the federal, state, or local level.

Application for this fellowship is via the Summer Fellowships Common Application

Description:

The Class of 1960 established the John Heinz Government Service Fellowship to honor the achievements of the late Senator John Heinz and to foster the spirit of public service he exemplified.

Senator Heinz, Class of ’60, served in the US House of Representatives from 1971 until 1977 when he was elected to the US Senate. He served there until he was tragically killed in a plane crash in 1991. The increasingly popular Senator Heinz was reelected for his third term in the Senate by more than 66% of the votes cast. His classmates funded the eight week, full time Fellowship program in his honor in 1992 with the first two of more than 80 awards being made in 1993.

Application for this fellowship is via the Summer Fellowships Common Application

The John Heinz Government Service Fellowship is awarded annually to about five sophomores or juniors in Yale College to support U.S. government service internships in federal, state, or local departments and agencies (including agencies such as housing and NASA). The internship may take place in the U.S.A or overseas and must be during the summer following the sophomore or junior year.

Please see here for an index of United States government departments and agencies. A service internship with a private entity funded by government would not be eligible for this fellowship.

Fellowship proposals will be evaluated for their connection with the candidate's previous educational and work-related experience, and future goals in government service. Students may not apply for both the John Heinz Fellowship and the Les Aspin '60 Summer Fellowship.

Please note that fellowship funds are meant to cover the costs of the proposed activity only. Budgets should not include compensation for lost income.

Minimum duration:
Internships of 8 weeks or more are strongly preferred but congressional internships of 4 weeks will be considered. The proposed project must be a full-time commitment and be the primary activity for the duration of the fellowship.

Application Information:

All materials must be submitted online prior to the deadline. Late applications will not be accepted.

A complete application consists of:

1. Language Evaluation: If required, your language evaluation should be submitted electronically by your evaluator through the Student Grants Database. Once you register on this page you will be able to enter the e-mail address of your evaluator and solicit your language evaluation. This will then automatically send the evaluation form to your evaluator.

2. Letter of Reference: One letter of reference submitted electronically via the Student Grants Database. You will be able to solicit this letter once you begin your application. Additional letters of reference will not be accepted. Letters are expected to be received prior to the application deadline. If a letter of recommendation is not received, that application is considered incomplete and will not be reviewed.

4. Project Proposal: A written proposal (1,000 words maximum, double spaced) describing in detail the project or program of study and travel, its objectives and challenges, your preparation, and how it will enhance and diversify your personal and academic goals. A well-planned itinerary should be included, if appropriate. Your Project Proposal must be uploaded and submitted electronically.

5. Resume/List of Activities and Awards: A current résumé, including significant extracurricular activities, work experience, awards and honors (one-page maximum, additional pages will be discarded). Your Resume/List of Activities and Awards must be uploaded and submitted electronically.

6. Budget: Detailing the projected costs of your proposed experience.

7. Unofficial Yale Transcript and Transcripts from Other Institutions: If applicable, unofficial transcripts from any institution attended, other than Yale, for post-secondary studies. Your transcript(s) must be scanned, uploaded and submitted electronically. Only submit the pages of your transcript showing grades, we do not require the codes on the back.

Interested applicants may schedule an appointment with a Fellowship Adviser; however, meeting with an adviser is not mandatory.

Finalists will be invited to interview with the Heinz committee and will be required to submit a written report after their experience.

Restrictions to Use of Award:

International students are not normally given grants for projects conducted in their home countries. If there is a question, see a fellowships adviser.

All interested applicants must review the Yale University International Travel Policy. Projects in specific countries within approved regions listed below may not be eligible for funding based on current MedEx threat ratings, State Department Warnings, and the Yale University International Travel Policy.
