The Friedman Family Travel/Research Fellowship supports summer research projects related to urban development and urban studies in the U.S. or abroad, with a preference to be given to projects in developing countries.

All applicants must demonstrate how their projects are intellectually purposeful and aimed at increasing their knowledge in the area of urban studies or urban development.

Minimum duration: 5 weeks. Projects of shorter duration will not be considered. The proposed project must be a full-time commitment and be the primary activity for the duration of the fellowship.

Please refer to the definition of Urban Studies on Yale's Urban Studies homepage to identify whether/how your project or research is related to Urban Studies.

Applications received late or submitted via e-mail or in person will NOT be accepted.

Special Eligibility Requirements:

The Fellowship will be open to all Yale College students during the summer after their first year, sophomore, or junior years, with special preference given to students in Davenport College or any students who have Urban Studies as the concentration for their majors.

Restrictions to Use of Award:

To satisfy the minimum duration requirements of the fellowship to which you are applying, your project must your sole activity, conducted without interruption, for the duration of the experience.

Please note that fellowship funds are meant to cover the costs of the proposed activity only. Budgets should not include compensation for lost income or funding towards the Student Income Contribution.

All interested applicants must review the Yale University International Travel Policy. Projects in specific countries within approved regions may not be eligible for funding based on current ISOS threat ratings, State Department Warnings, and the Yale University International Travel Policy.

Yale University policy requires that certain types of research projects involving human subjects be reviewed by an institutional review board (IRB) prior to the start of the study to ensure that the project meets University requirements and any applicable regulations. Students applying to fellowships to support activities in or near their home towns may not be eligible to receive funding for certain budget items (e.g. housing). Please ask a fellowships adviser for more information.

International student applicants should inform the Office of International Students and Scholars of their plans to ensure they will be in compliance with the terms of their visa.
