Mellon Mays and Bouchet Common Application
Competition Type
Yale

Brief Description:

This is the common application for the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship and the Edward A. Bouchet Undergraduate Fellowship. Use this common application to apply for both fellowships.

Description:

The Edward A. Bouchet Fellowship Program is named in honor of Yale's first African-American graduate and the first African-American in the United States to earn a Ph.D. The Bouchet Fellowship is designed to increase the number of minority students and others with a demonstrated commitment to eradicating racial disparities, who will purse PhDs and subsequent careers in academia.

The Edward A. Bouchet Undergraduate Fellowship Program is an effort to increase the pool of young people qualified to meet the needs of educational institutions into the next century. Similar to the statements made by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation with respect to a similar fellowship program administered in Yale College, "the [Edward A. Bouchet] program aims to reduce over time the serious under-representation of individuals from certain minority groups at the faculty level, as well as to address the attendant educational consequences of these disparities. The program serves the related goals of structuring campus environments so that they will become more conducive to improved racial and ethnic relations, and of providing role models for all youth." The Fellowship allows students to work on paid research projects during the academic year, and to pursue full-time research during the summers between sophomore and junior years, and between junior and senior years.

The Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship Program is named after Dr. Benjamin E. Mays, educator, college president, and civil rights activist and underwritten by a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. This competitive program is designed to increase the number of minority students and others with a demonstrated commitment to eradicating racial disparities, who will purse PhDs and subsequent careers in academia in selected core fields in the Arts and Sciences. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent resident aliens.

The program also allows students to decrease their undergraduate and graduate educational loan obligations.

Information regarding summer research and funding:

Mellon Mays/Bouchet Fellows receive a stipend of $4500 to carry out research over the summer. A description of the kinds of research positions that are supported can be found on this page.

Fellows may apply for additional funding to complement their summer research stipend, up to a reasonable budget amount. However:

  • Fellows may not engage in full-time employment or non-research-based programs during the summer.
  • Summer stipends can only be disbursed in the summer the fellow is engaged in their research. Any funds not used in a summer are automatically forfeited as this funding does not carry over to the following summer.

Additional Fellowships offer research support over the summer, some of which may be found via the Student Grants Database.
These include but are not limited to:

-  CIPE Summer Research Fellowships Common Application
-  Residential College Richter and Mellon fellowships
-  Other fellowships available through residential colleges
-  RITM summer research fellowships
-  McMillan Summer funding fellowships
-  Departmental funding opportunities
American Economic Association Summer Training Program *

Please note:

  • Applicants are strongly encouraged to also apply for one of the national research early identification programs listed above all of which have deadlines that precede the MMUF/Bouchet finalist announcements. These programs are denoted by asterisks above.
  • Fellowships awarded beyond the Mellon Mays/Bouchet summer stipend may be adjusted to take into account the Mellon Mays/Bouchet award, up to a reasonable budget amount.

Resources related to planning and carrying out summer research can be found here.

Fellows are also strongly advised to make the most of the library events and resources and meet with their personal librarian as they are planning research.
Please check the Fellowships Calendar for workshops on applying for summer fellowships in collaboration with the Poorvu Center for Teaching and Learning
