Brief Description:

The Cahoon Summer Fellowship is an award of $5,000. The Fellowship will be given to a student from Morse, including current seniors, for engaging in at least 7 - 8 weeks of community service in the New Haven area (or for the citizens of New Haven) during the summer. Applications will be reviewed both by members of the Morse administration and by senior staff at Dwight Hall.

Description:

This Morse College fund was set up by an alumnus to honor Herb and Jean Cahoon. Herb (who passed away in 2008) and Jean Cahoon (who passed away in 2014) who were involved with the development of Dwight Hall student activities since 1961. They dedicated a substantial part of their careers to encouraging students to work in New Haven and generate life-long interest in the value of public service. The fund, known as the Cahoon Summer Fellowship, is an award of $5,000. The Fellowship will be given to a student from Morse, including current seniors, for engaging in at least 7-8 weeks of community service in the New Haven area (or for the citizens of New Haven) during the summer. Applications will be reviewed both by members of the Morse administration and by senior staff at Dwight Hall.

Application Information:

  1. A project proposal, no more than 500 words, of the community service activity that you propose. The description should include a detailed account of what you will be doing, where you will be doing it, for how long, and for how many hours each week. It should include an account of why you think this activity is important and how it will help the community. The description should also explain who you will be working with and who your supervisors, if any, will be. It is anticipated that most activities will be part of an ongoing organizational structure, but independent activities will also be considered providing that the applicant list a faculty or staff mentor at Yale who has agreed to meet regularly with the applicant throughout the summer to discuss their activity.

  2. A copy of your current transcript (it can be unofficial).

  3. A list of your extracurricular activities at Yale broken down into two sub-lists, one listing activities that are clearly understood as service activities, and one listing all other activities.

  4. A list of any employment that you will have during the proposed summer, the dates, the hours of work and any compensation that you expect. Please be aware that awarded prizes will be more than honorary, but not lavish.

  5. A signed statement at the end of the application indicating that receipt of the Fellowship funds is also a commitment to submit, by September 1st of the funded summer, a 1,000-word report describing the activity and what was accomplished. 
International students are required to complete the Foreign National Information System (FNIS) application with the International Tax Department. The FNIS application determines U.S. tax residency in order to withhold and report federal tax, as required. Special Eligibility Requirements:

Current Morse College student, including seniors.

International student applicants should inform the Office of International Students and Scholars (OISS) of their plans to ensure they will be in compliance with the terms of their visa.

Restrictions to Use of Award:

Engaging in at least 7-8 weeks of community service in the New Haven area (or for the citizens of New Haven) during the summer.
