Global Health Studies at Yale invites applications to the 2024 Global Health Awards for Research Projects.
The Program seeks to support students committed to global health as they take steps to design, undertake, and disseminate original research. Proposed research projects can be undertaken in the lab or in the field, and fall within the biological sciences, the social sciences, or the humanities. They should aim to strengthen the student’s relevant skills in global health and be situated in ethical partnerships with scholars and communities in ways that raise awareness or contribute to improving human health. Awards support undergraduates as they develop original research projects in global health studies, including the social, political, ethical, cultural, economic, and/or other key dimensions of health. Students must produce a short, written report, an oral presentation (e.g. for the Senior Colloquium), podcast, and/or visual product to disseminate the information gained from their research, to be submitted to the Global Health Program no later than three months after completion of their work.
Applicants are reminded that the proposed research must be a full time and exclusive occupation for a continuous period of 8 weeks or more in order to be eligible to receive this award. Applicants must be at the research location stated in the proposal for the duration of this period.
Research proposals should be 3-5 pages in length and should include:
The problem statement or research question
Background information (why is this research important, what is already known about this problem and what new knowledge will be gained)
Research design (how will the research be conducted), including detailed methodology such as how the data will be collected and how it will be analyzed
Expected outcomes
Any ethical considerations, anticipated challenges and research limitations
The name of your faculty mentor and a description of how they will be involved
References to peer-reviewed literature are expected and do not count in the page limit
In addition to the proposal, all applicants must provide:
• A proposed project budget which reflects projected costs for this summer experience, as well as a list of the other grants and fellowships for which the applicant has or intends to apply.
•A current one-page resume including significant extracurricular activities, work experience, awards and honors (one-page maximum, additional pages will be deleted).
•A letter of recommendation from your proposed mentor (preferably a Yale faculty member) which addresses the applicant's qualifications to conduct the proposed research, the scholarly merits of the proposed project, and a plan for the supervision of the project.
•If the applicant's mentor is a Yale faculty member who will not accompany the student during the project period, a letter of support from the in-country host organization.
•A language evaluation, if required. (Please NOTE: A language evaluation is not required for projects in English-speaking countries. If you are traveling to a non-English speaking country and do not speak the language, in your proposal please address how you intend to accomplish your goals.)
•An unofficial copy of your Yale transcript
•Transcripts from Other Institutions: If applicable, unofficial transcripts from any institution attended, other than Yale, for post-secondary studies.
