Brief Description:

The Japan Program of the Council on East Asian Studies has established the Summer Fellowship in Japan to support internships, projects, and research taking place in Japan. Language study and other study programs are not eligible.


Description:

Minimum duration: 8 weeks. Projects of shorter duration will not be considered. The proposed project must be a full-time commitment and be the primary activity for the duration of the fellowship.


Freshmen, sophomores, and juniors who have taken some coursework related to Japan and who wish to build upon that exposure and interest are eligible to apply. Preference will be given to those students whose project is intended to contribute to their senior essays. Applicants should indicate their level of Japanese language competency and demonstrate that it is adequate for their plans.

The Summer Fellowship in Japan is one of the grants on the Office of Fellowships Summer Projects Common Application. 

All materials must be submitted online prior to the deadline.



Special Eligibility Requirements:

NOTE: Students who graduate in December are eligible to apply for most summer fellowships in the summer before their graduation.

Not all fellowships support all activities, please read the description of each individual fellowship carefully as eligibility and restrictions will vary.

You may apply to multiple fellowships with the same proposal.

You may only submit ONE proposal for summer fellowships administered by the Office of Fellowships Summer Projects Common Application. Proposals for multiple summer projects will not be considered.

Application materials will not be accepted via email or in person and late applications will not be accepted under any circumstances.

Internships must be low/unpaid. A low or unpaid internship is defined as earning $250 or less per week. 


Restrictions to Use of Award:

To satisfy the minimum duration requirements of the fellowship to which you are applying, your project must your sole activity, conducted without interruption, for the duration of the experience.

Please note that fellowship funds are meant to cover the costs of the proposed activity only. 
Budgets should not include reimbursement of lost wages or funding toward the Student Share of a financial aid award.

All interested applicants must review the Yale University International Travel Policy. Projects in specific countries within approved regions may not be eligible for funding based on current International SOS global threat ratings, State Department Warnings, and the Yale University International Travel Policy.

Yale University policy requires that certain types of research projects involving human subjects be reviewed by an 
institutional review board (IRB) prior to the start of the study to ensure that the project meets University requirements and any applicable regulations. Click here to see if your project needs to be reviewed, for advice on working with human subjects, and for more information about the process and requirements.

Students applying to fellowships to support activities in or near their home towns may not be eligible to receive funding for certain budget items (e.g. housing). Please ask a fellowships adviser for more information.

International student applicants should inform the 
Office of International Students and Scholars of their plans to ensure they will be in compliance with the terms of their visa.
