Brief Description:

The Yale College First-Year Summer Research Fellowship in the Sciences and Engineering seeks to promote the academic development of promising students through engagement in original scientific and engineering research projects.

Description:

The Yale College First-Year Summer Research Fellowship in the Sciences & Engineering program provides support for a summer research experience under the supervision of a Yale faculty member. Applicants are expected to have laid an appropriate foundation through their coursework and to present a well-developed proposal for a research project with substantial pedagogic and scholarly merit.

Award recipients will perform research during the summer of 2024 and participate in the Entering Summer Research workshops. The workshops are mandatory for 6 weeks and meet for an hour.

Stipend support of $5,000 is granted for a full-time 10 week summer research experience. Currently enrolled first-years proposing research in the natural sciences, engineering, mathematics and computer science are eligible to apply. Research must be supervised by a member of the Yale faculty (including the Graduate and Professional Schools), and will normally be conducted at Yale. *NOTE: If you applied for and received the Yale College First-Year Fellowship last summer, you are not eligible to apply again.  Please apply for the Yale College Dean's Summer Research Fellowship.

Application Information:

Applications are due Wednesday, March 6, 2024 by 3:00pm and must include the following:

1) A detailed description of the proposed research program, including the research and training objectives, and how the proposed research and participation in other program activities will prepare the applicant for further study in his or her field of interest. Please go to this site, https://science.yalecollege.yale.edu/stem-fellowships/how-write-proposal, and follow the directions there to complete your research proposal. You must work with your research mentor to complete the research proposal.

2) A copy of the applicant’s transcript (an “unofficial” copy or academic record printed from the web or obtained in the applicant’s residential college dean’s office is acceptable).

3) CV/resume and a detailed description of previous research experience.

4) A letter of recommendation from the proposed faculty mentor (head of the lab/PI). Information on what must be included in the letter of recommendation from your research PI can be found here

5) A second letter of recommendation is required.  Your second letter should come from a Yale professor who knows your academic abilities (first choice), or from your high school STEM teacher who knows you well.   The letter should speak to the applicant's abilities and propensities to succeed in research and can be from a previous PI (within or outside of Yale) or another mentor or professor but should not be from the same lab as your proposed mentor.
