Description:
The Council on African Studies at the Whitney and Betty MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies invites applications from Graduate and Professional School students for the Lindsay Fellowship for mentored research in Africa. This Fellowship is made possible through a generous gift from George N. (B.A. 1941, LL.B. 1947) and Mary Lindsay.
The purpose of the fellowship is to increase understanding and promote scholarship on Africa among Yale students. The fellowship is open to Graduate and Professional school students, and priority will be given to M.A. students in the African Studies program and CAS graduate affiliates.
One or more fellowships of up to $3,000 will be awarded for field research in Africa. Projects must be carried out during the summer and/or fall semester in 2023. Funded students must submit a two-page written report at the completion of the field experience. Recipients will also be asked to present the findings of their research at a symposium hosted by the Council on African Studies during the 2023-24 academic year. Any publication or public presentations resulting from their projects should acknowledge the support of the Lindsay Fellowship and the Council on African Studies at Yale.
Application Information:
Notifications of awards will be made throughout the semester. Submit your proposal and budget at least 30 days before your travel. You have to submit your receipts for reimbursements within 10 days of your return. Failure to do so may result in forfeiture.
Applicants must submit a project description describing the Africa focus and include dates and locations of travel, unofficial transcript, proof of conference participation, and budget including total of estimated expenses and noting available sources of and applications for other funds. Equipment purchases are not allowed. There is no reimbursement for food. Reimbursements will only be for travel, accommodations, or conference registration fees.
For conference grant proposals, note that PhD students should apply for MacMillan Center International Conference Travel grants first. MA students are prioritized for conference grants.

Grants can pay for transportation, conference registration fee, and lodging expenses only. Meals will need to paid from other sources.
