Brief Description:

CAS Graduate Student Conference/Research Awards are available to Yale Graduate and Professional School students to help defray travel costs for research trips or trips to conferences to present papers in or about Africa.




Description:

The Council on African Studies at the Whitney and Betty MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies invites applications from Graduate and Professional School students for the Graduate Student Conference/Research awards. The Graduate Student Conference/Research awards are given to defray conference costs or cost of short-term research on Africa; the maximum award amount is $500. If applying for conference funds, the purpose of attending the conference has to be to present a paper on an Africa-related topic or participate in an Africa-related topic/workshop. Eligible students may apply year-round for the Graduate Student Conference/Research award as applications are reviewed and funds awarded on a rolling basis.



Application Information:

Notifications of awards will be made throughout the semester. Submit your proposal and budget at least 30 days before your travel. You have to submit your receipts for reimbursements within 10 days of your return. Failure to do so may result in forfeiture.

Applicants must submit a project description describing the Africa focus and include dates and locations of travel, unofficial transcript, proof of conference participation, and budget including total of estimated expenses and noting available sources of and applications for other funds. Equipment purchases are not allowed. There is no reimbursement for food. Reimbursements will only be for travel, accommodations, or conference registration fees.

For conference grant proposals, note that PhD students should apply for MacMillan Center International Conference Travel grants first. MA students are prioritized for conference grants.

Restrictions to Use of Award:

Grants can pay for transportation, conference registration fee, and lodging expenses only. Meals will need to paid from other sources.
