The Marshall Bartholomew Summer Arts Fellowship was established by the Yale Glee Club to provide financial support for current Yale students who wish to design and implement their own community-based summer arts projects. The fellowship is named after Marshall Bartholomew (“Barty”), conductor of the Yale Glee Club from 1921 to 1953, and aims to encourage Yale students to envision new and creative ways of furthering Barty’s lifelong goal of bringing people together through music, especially choral singing.

Preference will be given to projects that involve choral singing, but other music related projects, and in rare circumstances other arts related projects, may be considered.

Examples of possible projects include but are by no means limited to:
1) Launching a summer youth chorus or orchestra in an economically disadvantaged area with the goal of presenting a culminating concert
2) Establishing a singing ensemble that seeks to empower marginalized members of society, such as the incarcerated, the homeless, or the mentally ill
3) Creating a new community outreach program for an existing choral organization
4) Taking on an unpaid internship in a choral or musical organization that has a strong service component
5) Starting an intergenerational community chorus

Successful applicants will receive funds to directly support their proposed projects (for the purchase of music and other materials, for example, or the rental of facilities), as well as funds to defray their own living expenses for a period of between eight to twelve weeks. The minimum project duration is eight weeks and the proposed project must be the primary activity for the duration of the fellowship. The fellowship is limited to freshmen, sophomores, and juniors.

Awards up to $6,000. In rare circumstances, larger amounts can be considered at the discretion of the selection committee.

Fellowship recipients will be required to report on their projects to the Yale Glee Club Associates upon completion.

Special Eligibility Requirements:

Preference will be given to lower-level students, but seniors are also eligible to apply.

Restrictions to Use of Award:

To satisfy the minimum duration requirements of the fellowship to which you are applying, your project must your sole activity, conducted without interruption, for the duration of the experience.

Please note that fellowship funds are meant to cover the costs of the proposed activity only. Budgets should not include compensation for lost income or funding towards the Student Income Contribution.

All interested applicants must review the Yale University International Travel Policy. Projects in specific countries within approved regions may not be eligible for funding based on current UnitedHealthcareGlobal threat ratings, State Department Warnings, and the Yale University International Travel Policy.

Yale University policy requires that certain types of research projects involving human subjects be reviewed by an institutional review board (IRB) prior to the start of the study to ensure that the project meets University requirements and any applicable regulations. Students applying to fellowships to support activities in or near their home towns may not be eligible to receive funding for certain budget items (e.g. housing). Please ask a fellowships adviser for more information.
