The Wendy E. Blanning Memorial Summer Fellowship is given each year to a sophomore and/or junior who receives financial aid from Yale but wants to pursue a professional interest that would be possible only with the Fellowship's financial support. The Blanning Fellowship supports unpaid summer internships in the U.S. and abroad in areas including, but not limited to, work with NGOs or non-profits, art, and architecture. Internships in the financial sector are not eligible.

Criteria for selection include the proposal's validity, feasibility, and relation to the applicant's professional goals; the applicant's academic and other preparation to undertake the proposed internship; and financial need. This fellowship is not intended to support internships which have a participation fee or program fee.

The proposed internship must be a full-time commitment and be the primary activity for the duration of the fellowship.

Wendy Elizabeth Blanning (1956-1976), a member of the Class of 1978, was an English major with professional plans in the field of architecture. For several summers she worked at architecture firms in New Haven, New York City, and Boston, but she found it increasingly difficult to pursue this career interest and still earn enough money for the following year in college.

The Wendy E. Blanning Memorial Summer Fellowship is one of the Yale College Summer Fellowships and all applicants must apply using the Office of Fellowships Summer Internship Common Application.

All materials must be submitted online prior to the deadline. Applications received late or submitted via e-mail or in person will NOT be accepted.

Special Eligibility Requirements:

Applicants must be receiving financial aid from Yale.

This fellowship is not intended to support internships which have a participation fee or a program fee.

Internships in the financial sector are not eligible.

A low/unpaid internships is defined as earning $250 or less per week.

Interested applicants may schedule an appointment with a Fellowship Adviser; however, meeting with an adviser is not mandatory.

Restrictions to Use of Award:

To satisfy the minimum duration requirements of the fellowship to which you are applying, your project must your sole activity, conducted without interruption, for the duration of the experience.

Please note that fellowship funds are meant to cover the costs of the proposed activity only. Budgets should not include compensation for lost income or funding towards the Student Share of a financial aid award.

All interested applicants must review the Yale University International Travel Policy. Projects in specific countries within approved regions may not be eligible for funding based on current International SOS threat ratings, State Department Warnings, and the Yale University International Travel Policy.

Yale University policy requires that certain types of research projects involving human subjects be reviewed by an institutional review board (IRB) prior to the start of the study to ensure that the project meets University requirements and any applicable regulations. Students applying to fellowships to support activities in or near their home towns may not be eligible to receive funding for certain budget items (e.g. housing). Please ask a fellowships adviser for more information.

International student applicants should inform the Office of International Students and Scholars of their plans to ensure they will be in compliance with the terms of their visa.
