The
Spanish and Latin American Fellowships
include the John O'Leary and Patricia Cepeda Fellowship for the Study of Latin America, the Niebla Foundation Travel Fellowship, and the Yale College Class of 2004 Travel Fellowship.
The Yale College Class of 2004 Travel Fellowship has been established to support undergraduate students at Yale pursuing study, work, travel, or language programs in a country where Spanish is the primary language. Two awards are expected to be made each year.

Due to the volume of applications, the Spanish and Latin American fellowships are only able to offer up to $2000 to support language study, study abroad or Yale Summer Session courses.

Spanish and Latin American Fellowships - Class of 2004 Travel Fellowship Fund
Supports a project or activity in any Spanish-speaking country
Activity must have a duration of at least 8 weeks
Yale first-years, sophomores and juniors
The Yale College Class of 2004 Travel Fellowship has been established to support undergraduate students at Yale pursuing study, work, travel, or language programs in a country where Spanish is the primary language. Two awards are expected to be made each year.
Notice to students applying for funding to support language study, study abroad or Yale Summer Session courses:

Preference will be given to students who have not previously lived, studied, or worked in a Spanish-speaking country.
Eligibility note
: To be eligible for this fellowship, you must have completed one year of Spanish language study at Yale, or the equivalent.
Students who have studied Spanish at Yale:
If you have studied Spanish at Yale, you may request a language evaluation from your most recent Yale language instructor.
Heritage Spanish Speakers:
If you are a heritage Spanish speaker but do not have formal proof of your language level, please explain your language exposure and level in the Language Self Evaluation form.
Students who have the equivalent of one year of introductory Spanish at Yale from another institution:
If you have the equivalent of one year of introductory Spanish at Yale but have not had instruction at Yale, please include transcripts from this institution, where possible. Please also explain your language exposure and level in the Language Self Evaluation form. You may request a language evaluation from your most recent language instructor.
The Yale College Class of 2004 Fellowship accepts applications to support projects which take place in summer and extend into term-time. Please apply via the Summer Fellowships Common Application.
For all term-time projects, students would need to take a
Leave of Absence
.
Application Information:
The Spanish and Latin American Fellowships are part of the
Office of Fellowships Summer Projects Application.
Please note:
If you intend to carry out a project which extends into term-time, you will need to take a
leave of absence
from the university.
Special Eligibility Requirements:
NOTE: Students who graduate in December are eligible to apply for most summer fellowships in the summer before their graduation.
Not all fellowships support all activities, please
read the description of each individual fellowship carefully
as eligibility and restrictions will vary.
You may apply to multiple fellowships with the same proposal.
You may only submit
ONE
proposal for summer fellowships administered by the Office of Fellowships Summer Projects Common Application. Proposals for multiple summer projects will not be considered.
Application materials will not be accepted via email or in person and late applications will not be accepted under any circumstances.
Internships must be low/unpaid. A low or unpaid internship is defined as earning $250 or less per week.
Restrictions to Use of Award:
To satisfy the minimum duration requirements of the fellowship to which you are applying, your project must your sole activity, conducted without interruption, for the duration of the experience.
Please note that fellowship funds are meant to cover the costs of the proposed activity only.
Budgets should not include
reimbursement of lost wages or funding toward the Student Share of a financial aid award
.
All interested applicants must review the
Yale University International Travel Policy
. Projects in specific countries within approved regions may not be eligible for funding based on current International SOS global threat ratings, State Department Warnings, and the Yale University International Travel Policy.
Yale University policy requires that certain types of research projects involving human subjects be reviewed by an
institutional review board (IRB)
prior to the start of the study to ensure that the project meets University requirements and any applicable regulations.

Students applying to fellowships to support activities in or near their home towns may not be eligible to receive funding for certain budget items (e.g. housing). Please ask a fellowships adviser for more information.
International student applicants should inform the
Office of International Students and Scholars
of their plans to ensure they will be in compliance with the terms of their visa.
