Description:

Davis Projects for Peace is an initiative for all undergraduates enrolled as of the fall term at any of the 90 American colleges and universities in the Davis United World College Scholars Program (including Yale). These students are invited to design grassroots projects that they will implement during the following summer, either in the U.S. or abroad. Individuals or groups of undergraduate students from the same institution may submit proposals. The 100 projects judged to be the most promising and do-able will be funded at $10,000 each. The objective is to encourage and support today’s motivated youth to create and try out their own ideas for building peace in the 21st century. For more information, visit the Davis Projects for Peace website; applicants may also wish to look at winning proposals from past years.

Please refer to the public service planning pages on the Fellowships website as you are considering your application.

Each year, Yale may nominate one proposal for funding and one alternate proposal that might be funded as well.  The campus nomination process is coordinated through Fellowship Programs, at the Yale Center for International & Professional Experience.

Interested students are strongly encouraged to meet with a fellowship adviser to discuss their application. Ideally, at least 2 weeks before the application deadline

Application Information:

Special information for group proposals only:

Each member of the group must be a Yale student, and each must create his or her own application in the Yale Student Grants Database and upload her/his own application materials. Each member must submit the same Project Proposal, Budget, and Letter(s) of Affiliation as the other members of the group. (Letters of affiliation should list the names of each member of the group; each member of the group does not need an individual letter.) The Language Evaluation and Résumé/List of Activities and Awards should be unique for each individual.

To apply for Yale's nomination for the Davis Projects for Peace, submit the following materials via the Yale Database in advance of the application deadline:

  1. Project Proposal: A written statement which describes the project (who, what, when, where, how, why) including expected outcomes and prospects for future impact (not to exceed two pages). Include your name (or the names of both Yale College students making the proposal, if applicable), and name of fellowship on the top of each page of your statement. (Be sure to include how your project is a contribution to lasting peace, as suggested in the official FAQs; you may wish to look at winning proposals from past years.)
  2. Budget: A completed official Davis Projects for Peace budget template (found on their website).

  3. Language Evaluation: optional. Language Evaluations are not required for English speaking countries, nor for students proposing projects in their native languages. Language evaluations should be submitted electronically by the evaluator via the Student Grants Database. Once you have created an application in the Yale Database, you will be able to enter the e-mail address of your evaluator and solicit a language evaluation. This will then automatically send the evaluation form to your evaluator.

  4. Letter of Affiliation: Where possible or appropriate, letters of support or affiliation or other statements from sponsors or contacts in the proposed host country. Your Letter of Affiliation may be scanned, uploaded and submitted electronically or sent to fellowship.applications@yale.edu prior to the campus application deadline.

  5. An unofficial Yale College transcript.
  6. Résumé: A current résumé, including significant extracurricular activities, work experience, awards and honors (one-page maximum).
Yale may nominate one proposal for funding and one alternate proposal that might be funded as well.  Applicants typically find out in early February whether or not their proposals have been nominated by Yale.  Word of which proposals have officially been selected for funding is usually shared in March.

Interested Yale applicants, after doing some research of their own, are strongly encouraged to meet with a fellowship adviser to discuss their application

Special Eligibility Requirements:

(no special requirements provided)

Restrictions to Use of Award:

All interested applicants must review the Yale University International Travel Policy. Note that projects in specific areas may not be eligible for funding.

Note: This award is subject to taxation as a fellowship (awardees will receive a 1099 form from University Accounting).

Yale University policy requires that certain types of research projects involving human subjects be reviewed by an institutional review board (IRB) prior to the start of the study to ensure that the project meets University requirements and any applicable regulations. Click here to see if your project needs to be reviewed, for advice on working with human subjects, and for more information about the process and requirements.
