Fund Details
South Asian Language Fellowship
Award Amount
up to $6,000 for summer, up to $12,000 for full academic year
Competition Type
Yale

Description:

The South Asian Language Fellowship, a program modeled after the Richard U. Light Fellowship, supports qualified undergraduate, graduate and professional students for intensive language study at approved programs in South Asia. The award may be used for transportation, tuition, room and board, and incidentals. Language study must bear a clear relationship to the applicant's overall course of study. Preference is given first to students planning study for a full academic year, then term-time projects, and then summer studies.

Grants are administered by CIPE Fellowship Programs.

Application Information:

A completed application includes:
  • An online application
  • A short proposal (no more than two pages)
  • A copy of the application to the program where you will apply to study
  • A letter of reference
  • A language evaluation
  • A brief budget
  • A copy of your most recent transcript(s)

All application material must be submitted online prior to the deadline posted. Applications received late or submitted via email or in person will NOT be accepted.

Applications for this grant/fellowship are managed through a single common application. Search the Yale Student Grants Database for "South Asian Language Study Grants - Common Application" for more details, or click "Apply" on this grant description page to start a common application for this grant.

Special Eligibility Requirements:

Qualified students are those who have already completed the beginning level coursework, or will have completed such work by the start of the language study abroad.

Successful applicants will be expected to submit a report on their experience upon completion.

Restrictions to Use of Award:

Awards are contingent on acceptance to an approved language program of the American Institute of Indian Studies (AIIS). Currently, the Tibetan language program at the Rangjung Yeshe Institute in Kathmandu, Nepal is also approved as a pilot program. Meet with an advisor to discuss these and other programs, or to propose language programs not yet approved.

All undergraduate students must adhere to the Yale University International Travel Policy. For more information visit: https://cipe.yale.edu/travel-resources/travel-policy

Yale University policy requires that certain types of research projects involving human subjects be reviewed and approved by an Institutional Review Board (IRB) prior to the start of the study to ensure that the project meets University Policy and any other applicable regulations. To see if your project needs to be reviewed, for advice on working with human subjects, and for more information about the IRB process and requirements go to: https://your.yale.edu/research-support/human-research
