Created in memory of Yung Wing - who graduated from Yale University in 1854 as the first Chinese student to earn a degree in North America - the Yung Wing Scholarship (Chinese Government Scholarship - Bilateral Program) supports enrollment in a graduate-level program, including further study of Chinese, in mainland China at an approved Chinese university. The duration is up to one academic year. The scholarship covers tuition, instructional material, housing and medical care in addition to a monthly stipend for living expenses in China. (It does not, however, include travel costs.)

Created in memory of Yung Wing, the first Chinese student to earn a degree at Yale University, the Yung Wing Scholarship (Chinese Government Scholarship - Bilateral Program) supports enrollment in a graduate-level program in mainland China, including further study of Chinese, at an approved Chinese university. The scholarship covers tuition, instructional material, housing and medical care in addition to a monthly stipend for living expenses in China. (It does not, however, include travel costs.)


The Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China has invited Yale University to nominate five students for a year-long Chinese Cultural (Yung Wing) Scholarship during the 2025-26 academic year. Eligible are undergraduate, graduating seniors, and graduate students who have completed (or will have completed by the end of spring term at least one year of Yale or Yale-equivalent formal Chinese language study. Recent alumni who meet these same requirements and have graduated within the past five years are also eligible.


Applicants must be non-Chinese nationals under the age of 30. An undergraduate recipient would need to take a Leave of Absence during the academic year of the fellowship.

Application Information:

All materials must be uploaded and submitted online through the Student Grants Database prior to the deadline. Any applications received late or via e-mail or in person will NOT be accepted.

Applicants who have also applied to the Richard U. Light Fellowship Program must read the special instructions in the Yung Wing Scholarship (Chinese Government Scholarship - Bilateral Program) online application regarding their application materials.

A complete application consists of:

1. Application: Completed online, once you click "Apply."

2. Language Evaluation:Your language evaluation should be submitted electronically by your evaluator through the Student Grants Database. Once you start your online application, by clicking "apply," you will be able to enter the e-mail address of your evaluator and solicit your language evaluation. This will then automatically send the evaluation form to your evaluator.

3. Letter of Reference: One or two letters of reference submitted electronically by your recommender through the Student Grants Database. One letter is required, a second is optional. You will be able to solicit letters once you start your application. Additional letters of reference will not be accepted. Letters are expected to be received prior to the application deadline. Letters submitted late may not be reviewed with your application.

4. Project Proposal/Program of Study: A written proposal (500- 1000 words, double spaced) describing in detail the program of study, its objectives and challenges, your preparation, and how it will enhance and diversify personal and academic goals. You must also list the three Chinese universities for which you wish to be considered. Your Project Proposal/Program of Study must be uploaded through the online application and submitted electronically.

5. Resume/List of Activities and Awards: A current résumé, including significant extracurricular activities, work experience, awards and honors (one-page maximum). Your Resume/List of Activities and Awards must be uploaded through the online application and submitted electronically.

You are not required to submit a Yale transcript. CIPE will obtain unofficial Yale transcripts for all applicants.



Special Eligibility Requirements:

Graduating seniors, graduate students, and alumni (within 5 years of graduation) are eligible to apply.

All applicants must select three Chinese universities where they would like to enroll in graduate programs or study Chinese language; see second link below. You should list these in your online application as well as in your Project Proposal/Program of Study. Admission to a graduate program (conducted in Chinese) or a Chinese language program rests with the Chinese universities; the China Scholarship Council reserves the right to make adjustments concerning the applicant’s preferred universities. Yale’s nominees will be informed by the end of July
2023 as to which university he or she will attend. Finalized placement may not be changed.




Restrictions to Use of Award:

All interested applicants must review the Yale University International Travel Policy. Projects in specific countries within approved regions listed below may not be eligible for funding based on current International SOS threat ratings, State Department Warnings, and the Yale University International Travel Policy.
